Use your own AI assistant

Ask your assistant who’s home, and get an answer that respects what each person chose to share.

You can connect an AI assistant to your PositionGuard groups and ask things like “Who is at the lake house?” or “How many people are home?”. It answers from the same presence your group already sees in the app, with one extra rule: every member decides for themselves whether AI assistants can see them.

Each person decides

In the PositionGuard app, under Settings, every member has a switch called Let AI agents see whether I’m at an area. It’s off until they turn it on. They can also hide themselves at a single area from that area’s settings.

For anyone who hasn’t turned it on, your assistant gets unknown, not “away”. A good assistant says it doesn’t know, and doesn’t guess.

What an assistant can and can’t see

• Which area someone is in, by name, such as Home or Lake House, and when they arrived
• How many people are at an area
• Never exact locations, and never location history
• Only areas in groups you share with that person
• Read-only: it can’t change anything or send messages

Two ways to connect

Any assistant that supports MCP. Run the PositionGuard MCP server and point your assistant at it. Its README covers setup, including Open WebUI and Home Assistant.

Get an Assistant key

Both ways start with an API key from the developer portal. Sign in with the same phone number you use in the app, then create a key:

• Type: Assistant, not Integration. Only an Assistant key respects each person’s AI switch. Integration keys are for home hubs like Home Assistant and Hubitat.
• Scopes: presence:read, counts:read and groups:read. Leave areas:read off, since it includes where each area is on the map.

The key is shown once. Keep it private, and revoke it from the portal if you stop using the assistant.
