Use your AI assistant with PositionGuard

Ask “Who’s home?” and get an answer that respects what each person chose to share.

Connect your assistant to your PositionGuard groups and ask things like “Who is at the lake house?” or “How many people are home?”. It answers from the same presence your group already sees in the app, with one extra rule: every member decides for themselves whether assistants can see them.

Connect your assistant in two minutes

There is nothing to install and no key to copy. You add one connector, and approve it in the PositionGuard app. The steps below work for Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants that support connectors; only where you add the connector differs.

  1. In the PositionGuard app, open the Assistants tab and turn on Let AI agents see whether I’m at an area.
  2. In your assistant, add a custom connector. In Claude that’s Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. In ChatGPT, go to chatgpt.com/plugins and choose Add custom MCP server, with Authentication set to OAuth. Name it PositionGuard and use this address:

  3. Click Connect. A PositionGuard page shows a short code and a QR code.
  4. Scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, or open the app and go to Assistants → Approve a connection and type the code. Check that the name and web address match your assistant (for Claude, Claude and claude.ai) and that it says Verified, then tap Allow.
  5. Back in your assistant, ask “Who’s at home?”

Requires PositionGuard for iPhone 2.2 or newer, or for Android 0.9.10 or newer. The code is valid for 10 minutes and only works in your app.

Which assistants work

Any assistant that can add a remote MCP connector with sign-in can use the same address. Claude and ChatGPT are tested and verified, so the approval screen shows their name, web address and Verified. Other assistants show as Unverified, so check the name and the web address before you tap Allow. Muse connects with a key instead; see For tinkerers below.

See and remove connections

The Assistants tab lists every assistant you’ve connected and when it last asked something. Tap Revoke and it loses access on its very next question. Turning the switch off pauses all of them at once.

Each person decides

Every member has their own switch, Let AI agents see whether I’m at an area, on the Assistants tab, on Home and in Settings. It’s off until they turn it on. They can also hide themselves at a single area from that area’s settings.

For anyone who hasn’t turned it on, your assistant gets unknown, not “away”, and is told that more people may be there than it can name. It says it doesn’t know rather than guessing. Your own switch matters too: if it’s off, your assistants see no one.

What an assistant can and can’t see

  • Which area someone is in, by name, such as Home or Lake House, and when they arrived
  • How many people are at an area
  • Never exact locations, and never location history
  • Only areas in groups you share with that person
  • Read-only: it can’t change anything or send messages

Prefer to run things yourself? These use an Assistant key from the developer portal instead of the sign-in above.

When you create the key, pick type Assistant, not Integration: only an Assistant key respects each person’s switch. Integration keys are for home hubs like Home Assistant and Hubitat. Use the scopes presence:read, counts:read and groups:read, and leave areas:read off, since it includes where each area is on the map. The key is shown once; revoke it from the portal if you stop using it.
